Quest Log: April '22

Writer: MelMel

I'm a bit late on our monthly Quest Log. I came down with the Rona which set me back a bit from posting our monthly update. The good news is that I'm on the mend! Woohoo! Let's dive into what we have been up to during the month of April.

Gannon:

Final Fantasy XIV: Finally completing the hurdle of the third boss in this current raid tier is what MMO raiding is all about. Working hard and practicing until you can defeat a seemingly impossible challenge. The new PVP is super enjoyable and I am excited for the direction they are going with the story in the patch quests.

Sea of Thieves: Inspired to play because my nephew started playing, I really enjoy this as a relaxing and fun pirate sandbox. Plus who doesn’t want to live out the fantasy of being the Gentlemen Pirate?

Ready for an adventure? YAAARRRGGG!

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: With the surprising early release of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in July, I decided to go back and beat this game. Combat is so smooth once you get all the parts. It’s definitely a long haul game but has the added benefit of being mobile. With my soon hiatus upcoming, having a game I can play easily and put down is a must.

Brodie:

Elden Ring: I know, I know... I'm still working through this one. It's been a labor of love. I do still feel like this is one of the most incredible games I've ever played, but some of these fights are rough as hell (looking at you Fire Giant and Mohg.) Added a few new weapons to my lineup (why is nobody talking about how good the Omenkiller weapons are for STR scaling blood loss?) Anyways, from what folks say I'm nearly done with my inverse-Frodo adventure and I will definitely remember this game fondly (although not sure how much I'll play it after completing it.)

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands: Have been trying to save this for after Elden Ring, but have played a bit here and there. So far it's definitely scratched the Borderlands itch, and the gunplay/spells/abilities seem like a lot of fun. This is up next, mark my words!

Vampire Survivors: I talked about it in a recent pod, but I've started to have the VS runs that everyone is talking about and they are WILD. Everyone who described this game as pure dopamine is 100 percent accurate. I also agree with Dale's statement that this might be the best $3 you can spend on a video game. Anyways, watching everything explode around you is a lot of fun and an excellent way to kill 20 minutes.

Tabletop Roundup: While I am only playing a few video games, I'm back on my bullshit at the table. First up is Bandido, a co-op maze game I learned about on BoardGameArena. It's goofy and fun. I love games that take literally 60 seconds to teach. Next is a game I knew nothing about but fell deeply in love with - Everdell. Everdell is a dynamic worker placement tableau building game that feels spiritually linked with a ton of games like Lost Ruins of Arnak, Fantasy Realms, Wingspan, It's a Wonderful World, Viticulture, etc. Not only is it a ton of fun trying to get the best cards and combos, it's adorable too. I have owned it for 2 days and already played it 3 times. Finally, the latest addition to the table is Lord of the Rings LCG from Fantasy Flight. I'm real big on these at the moment, so I decided to add the revised edition. Haven't played it yet, but it looks like it uses a lot of the same concepts as Arkham Horror and Marvel Champions. That makes me happy. I hope to get it to the table soon!

Dale:

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands: I finished this recently, and I'm still going back and farming for loot, messing with builds, and grinding chaos dungeons. That must mean it's pretty good right? I'm just waiting for either more DLC or a sale so I can justify picking up the season pass. Plus, they've fixed all the bugs, so that's pretty cool, too

Nobody Saves the World: This game is real fun, real well written, and full of hilarious characters and transformations. You can be an egg, dudes. AN EGG. It's on Game Pass, so there's no reason not to check it out if you have a subscription.

Be one with the egg

Deathloop: I understand why this was in so many game of 2021 conversations. I'm 20 hours in and loving this so far. The story is compelling, the weapons and abilities are all unique, and the environments are designed in such a way that it will make you feel clever for utilizing them. My only complaint is that the world is so heavily detailed that knowing what you can/can't interact with can sometimes be blurry, which has caused me to need to backtrack to pick up things that I've missed but were essential for progression. But I guess when you relive the same day over and over again, that's not so much of a drawback is it?

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodhunt: Do you like Fortnite? Do you wish it had vampires in it? If you answered yes to both of those questions, this game is for you. This game is not for me. Which is a shame, because I love the World of Darkness roleplaying game that this is based on, and was really hoping for a unique take on the Battle Royal genre. This could have been so good, but instead I've already uninstalled it.

Storybook Brawl: I was in an MMR death spiral for much of the month, but I've recently pulled out of it. Unfortunately, the monthly tournament took place righ

t in the middle of my losing streak, so I did pretty poorly. That said, they recently introduce a "Pro Clubr", where you can earn cool in game rewards and real life swag just for playing in the tournaments, so unless they start doing some dumb NFT bullshit, I'll be playing this for quite some time.

Clay:

Slay the Spire: I just can’t quit this game lately. It’s comfort food for me, and I have been in need of some simply comfort I guess! I have beaten the heart with the two builds I never made work before: Shiv decks and a non-block based Ironclad deck! God I love this game.

Lego Skywalker Saga: A Star Wars fan’s dream. I am absolutely loving how simple, but fun the gameplay is while making me laugh out loud the entire way. Reliving some of my favorite movies—even the bad ones— has been a blast. Absolutely recommend to any die hard Star Wars fan.

The gang is all here in the Skywalker Saga

Triangle Strategy: I standby all the shit I gave this game for its horrible, horrible name. But it is REALLY FUCKING GOOD. It is a current game of the year contender for me, sitting far closer to Elden Ring than I ever expected. I adore the game top to bottom, even if it’s narrative can be a bit long in the tooth.

Mel:

Donut County: You play as a racoon who controls a hole, and you suck items into your hole… Yeah, it sounds weird because it is weird. Obviously, there is a story behind the hole but without heavily spoiling the whole story, the dialogue was really cute, and the music has been top notch. It was very casual short game that is on Xbox Game Pass if you’re interested in trying it out.

Later, rabbit! Enjoy getting sucked into my hole

Disco Elysium: I have a few hours in this game and I haven’t really made any progress. I have no clue what is happening and either does the main character. I guess that’s the whole point of the game. I’m trying to get to the part where the game blows my mind but I haven’t gotten there yet. My playthroughs have been exploratory and dialogue driven. I’ll let you know when I get to the good part.

Final Fantasy XIV: Crafting has been taking up a lot of my time and I still haven’t beaten A Realm Reborn. I really should be focusing on MSQ, but I’m enjoying the grind. The Weavers is probably the worst crafting out of them all, but I’m making progress. I'm also doing a lot of fishing charters with friends because fishing is the BEST in this game.

Gorogoa: I played this game on my Steam Deck and it was an enjoyable little puzzle game. Essentially, there are one to four panels that you can manipulate and associate with each other to progress the game. Some of the puzzles were sort of convoluted and required you to really check all the options in each of the panels. I had to put the game down a few times because it just wasn’t making sense to me. Overall, I spent like $10 on the game and have a 94 minute playtime. Take it as you will, but it's not a game I would be recommending people to buy right now. Luckily, this game is also on Xbox Game Pass.

Storybook Brawl: I'm still grinding this out. I have reached 1982 points and some how cannot break the 2000 barrier. Most of the time I'm playing this game on my Steam Deck. It's not a verified game so playing on it can be a bit wonky which has resulted me deleting characters that were essential for my build... Devastating mistakes were made. I'm still enjoying the game and I cannot wait to see how the new updates affect the meta.
